Is It a Good Thing To Be Patriotic?
Is it really a good thing to be a patriot? I would believe so. As an American citizen whose family has had almost every member in the service, I extremely support patriotism.
My entire family has joined every single branch of the army. My great grandfather was in the navy and then he joined the air force. My grandfather was in the air force. My cousin is in the army. And my uncle was in the marines. I am actually the first person in my family who did not want to me in a branch of the military. I was in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets for a small period of time when I realized that it was not what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted something else. However, I did try it out.
Despite all the good my family has done for this country, it has led some of them into the worst depression that they could possibly imagine. However, despite the daily pain that they go through, they say that it was worth it. They explain that they get the overall satisfaction of being able to say that they gave their all so that everyone else could receive what they want.
My grandfather is possibly the one who has suffered the most. He served in the Vietnam War. He served in the Airforce. I have heard fascinating and gruesome stories that would normally twist a persons stomach. The conditions the men lived in were absolutely horrendous. He always shares how much he loves having a bed because he remember how he would roll over in the night, and how he could remember hearing the bugs crunch underneath him.
Despite all of his nasty stories, he still never regrets doing it. He may have a bad heart because of what he was exposed to, but he would never take it back. I wish I had this type of patriotism. I, honestly, cannot even imagine how he must feel about our presidential candidates. He must want to let out ever bit of frustration on the television any time there is any ridiculous statement about how the candidates were attacking each other on Twitter.
Being patriotic has its ups and downs. I have heard the opinions and stories behind both sides. The pros to being patriotic include the benefits that you receive as a citizen an din your own mind. You are more likely to feel proud of yourself if you serve the country and do your best to give it everything that you have. However, if you are against being patriotic, the overall outcome results in what is happening in North Carolina. Everyone is ending up injured or worse, dead.
It is terrifying what might happen to all of us, however, my opinion will remain the same. Be a patriot. Stand up for your country. Do not let anything bring you down. Defend what you believe in. Never ever let anyone bash your beliefs.
